Simple Vector Addition: Head to Tail

Consider the following problem: A man walks 9 meters due east, then 8 meters due north, then 3 meters due west. What will be his resulting displacement?

To solve this problem place the vectors head to tail like the example at right.

The resultant vector begins at the very first head and ends at the very last tail.
