Refraction

When Light enters one substance into another it can change direction. This is called refraction. To understand why this happens let us first think of an example involving a car on concrete pavement which drives into sand.





Something similar happens to light when it moves between substances. This is because light moves at different speeds in different substances. Light waves also have a thickness. See an example below.
